What we feed our dog is always a hot topic. So, why did I choose raw?
Let me start off by saying that switching Buster to raw dog food on my part was 100% out of sheer frustration and desperation, because he is an allergy monster. He has a crazy amount of environmental and food allergies. Luckily, I had been researching raw dog food for at least a couple months off and on, so it’s not like it was a completely blind, uneducated decision, but it was still a decision that I made while I was practically in tears over everything that he is allergic to. While I was previously feeding Orijen and Acana (and still think they are fabulous companies to this day), he was becoming allergic to those foods, and I do have to say, I personally hate the kibble industry and don’t trust many of the manufacturers for a variety of reasons.
Buster has been on a raw dog food since September 2013. He is on Stella & Chewy’s, which is a commercially pre-made 100% balanced raw dog food. There is SO SO much information to learn to be able to feed raw dog food from scratch. While I have read a ton of books on the subject and even work with a holistic veterinarian who does support raw, I just don’t feel comfortable with the idea of doing it myself… yet. Buster is a sensitive little dog, and at work I often see the horrific effects of dogs not eating a balanced diet. I want to make sure that when I do it from scratch, that I do it completely right. I do not want to risk Buster’s health. I also want to make sure that I have access to local meat so that I can talk to the owners of the farm and know exactly what is in the meat and exactly how it is processed. I personally don’t even like buying meat at the grocery store for my husband and I to eat, but since Buster has to have “exotic” proteins (like duck, sometimes turkey, rabbit, kangaroo, etc.) because he is allergic to chicken, beef, and venison, it is a bit harder to find a local butcher or farmer’s market with the meat that he can eat.
